From June 2 to 5, the UK celebrated Queen Elizabeth II's 70th anniversary on the throne (在位).
Attendees and members of the royal family wore a variety of stylish hats throughout the celebrations. The Queen herself wore a large blue hat and a matching outfit (服裝) on the first day of activities as she stood with her family on the Buckingham Palace balcony. The Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, wore a saucer-like (像茶托的) blue and white hat as she stood next to the queen.
It is a requirement for all women to wear hats on royal occasions. This rule dates back to the 1950s when upper-class and royal women would rarely show their hair in public, according to the BBC. Hats are "part of the social fabric" of upper-class events in British society, Hilary Alexander, former fashion director at The Daily Telegraph, told ABC News.
Hats have always played a part in UK culture, with various rules regarding hat-wearing. For men, it is considered rude to wear a hat inside, while women are exempt (免除) from this rule. To show someone respect, a tip of the hat is common.
