《Fulfillment of the mind》
Living a varied life can lead to a richer mind
How do you define a good life? Many would answer a happy life or a meaningful one. However, there could be a third answer: a “psychologically rich” life.
According to study authors Shige Oishi from the University of Virginia and Erin Westgate from the University of Florida, richness in life is defined by extraordinary, diverse, and complex experiences that crucially lead to a change in perspective.
Across three surveys involving 1,336 college students, Oishi and Westgate discovered that individuals were able to distinguish psychological richness from happiness and meaning when evaluating their own lives and well-being. “Unlike happy or meaningful lives, psychologically rich lives are best characterized by a variety of interesting and perspective-changing experiences,” wrote the researchers in their paper.

They also pointed out that moving to another country, transitioning (轉(zhuǎn)變) to a different career, or engaging with challenging art – such as James Joyce’s novel Ulysses as cited in the study – are three examples of the type of psychological richness that people seek.
A change in perspective, which often signifies growth, can arise from unique experiences. For instance, study abroad programs can transform our thinking about life, while secondhand experiences from literature and film can also enrich our psychological perspective. “Humans created art and culture to essentially help themselves go through a wealth of experiences secondhand,” Oishi said.
