Research on Bilingual Education of Young children Improving Developmental Quotient (DQ)

Abstract: Based on improvement of Chinese population quality and cultivation of talents for new century, this paper adopts methods of DQ test and statistical analysis disclosing that bilingual education of young children has significant biological and medical effects on improving DQ and providing important evidences for deep development of general educational reform with 6-year bilingual teaching practice of young children.

Ⅰ. Introduction 
In the era of knowledge-driven economy, core of educuation is to develop creative thinking and innovation ability of talents. According to research outcomes of educational psychology, the academic success (achievement) has functional relationships with the product of intelligence multiplied by non-intelligence, i.e. A={(I.N). The former refers to intelligence quotient and the latter includes all physical and mental qualities formed by nurture. In the period of young child, the A in the formula could be intepreted to be developmental quotient (DQ).
The critical period of human beings on physical and mental development is under 6 years old. Therefore, how to improve DQ of young children is always a significant project of which educators concentrate on studies.
The research group of Teaching Research on English of Young Children and Teen-Age Youths organized and led by Ge Jianren, associate researcher of China National Institute of Educational Research, Ministry of Education made a beneficial exploration on intelligence development of young children and teen-age youths and cultivation of physical and mental quality with 6-year English teaching experimental study from September, 1993 based on Jianren Experimental Training School of Dongcheng District, Beijing. This paper is one of research reports of the research group.
Ⅱ. Content and Method
The school got 4050 young children and primary school students involved in the experiment in Beijing and Hebei covering 20 kindergartens and 14 elementary schools in the form of running a school jointly.
1.       Experimental method: the class involved in the experiment and the compared class in the same kindergarten (school) are both natural classes. Besides bilingual teaching, the former enjoys identical educational environment and teaching contents with the compared class. The foreign language teaching is 10 class hours per week for young taking Jianren English as the textbook (a teaching material for young children with excellent illustrations and accompanying essays compiled and printed by the research group.).
2.       Sample collection: select three age groups of young children (3 to 4 years old, 4 to 5 years old and 5 to 6 years old, that is young children in bottom, middle and top classes respectively) in kindergarten of Aerospace Depatment Third Hospital which controls its experimental conditions strictly, to be involved in the experiment as a mixed age group. Draw 12 young children (half male and half female) at random from each class involved in the experiment to be test specimens. It uses the corresponding and the same sampling method in the compared class.
3.       Test content: the test content is DQ including five components of gross motor, fine motor, adaptive capacity, language and social intercourse. It specially invited Capital Institute of Pediatrics to operate it comprehensively in order to ensure the scientificity of the experiment.
Ⅲ. Result and Analysis
The sample data analysis is processed on computer by Division of Health Science, Teacher’s College of Beijing Union University. Results in table 1:

Ⅳ. Discussion and Conclusion
1.       The experimental design and operating conditions of the research were controlled strictly. All critical links of teaching practice, sample collection, DQ test and data process were operated respectively by scientific and technical personnel from different institutes who didn’t know the final purpose of their operation to ensure the objectivity and authenticity of the experiment.
2.       Significant experimental results: probability value of t which is P <0.05 means the experiment is positive. Thus the conclusion of bilingual teaching improving DQ significantly could be made.
3.       In general bilingual teaching of young children, it will build a pronunciation base for English learning in school period. The experiment proves that its biological and medical effects, in more important significance, provide scientific evidences for enriching educational theory and have universal meaning on deep development of Chinese educational reform.

Communicative English Teaching Model for Young Children takes lifestyle English teaching for young children as its theoretical basis. Communicative English Teaching Model for Young Children is a reform to the teaching content and teaching method of kindergartens and an educational form of introducing another language (English) into the language teaching of kindergartens. It “integrates” English teaching of young children with relevant life details at kindergarten everyday, into the language teaching activities of kindergarten and into related life details of young children at home. It makes young children learn and English freely, joyfully and naturally in experiencing activities facilitated by kindergarten teachers and parents based on learning “mother tongue” (Chinese) well to develop their interest in learning English, improving their oral expression abiligy and social intercourse capacity in English and forming them a good habit of mastering and using English.

Twenty years ago, Jianren Experimental Training School of Dongcheng District, Beijing was established with the great tide of reforming and opening up in order to discuss and practice law of development of English teaching for young children in China and fill the gap of English teaching for young children of China.
During the past twenty years, Jianren Experimental Training School always kept the conceptual direction of scientific research with principle of social benefit first, development idea of practice and innovation, harmonious and united team spirit and school-running path of win-win cooperation aiming at the origin of educating people.
During the past twenty years, all teaching staff of Jianren Experimental Training School worked hard and dedicated themselves to work selfless making fruitful achievements in scientific research of English teaching for young children. They created Mother Tongue Didactics, built Communicative English Teaching Model for Young Children, edited English teaching material for young children with localized teaching contents, made the training system of English teachers of young children, perfected the scientific assessment system of English teaching for young children and discussed and practiced the path connecting English teaching of young children with Chinese studies teaching.
During the past twenty years, Jianren Experimental Training School trained English teachers for young children with philosophy of learning to be an honest person, learning to do things and learning to study. 500 fresh College graduates worked on English teaching for young children and scientific researches in Jianren Experimental Training School early or late making a significant contribution to English educational business for young children and promotion of teaching and scientific research achievements in China.
In the past twenty years, the English educational business done by Jianren Experimental Training School for young children obtained supports of parents of young children, leaders of kindergartens and the society and acquired good results both on teaching and on educating people. Only in Beijing, hundreds of thousands of young children got involved in the English teaching experiment and benefited from it. The fruitful teaching achievements are well received by the society and spreaded.
In the past twenty years, Jianren Experimental Training School experienced a tortuous journey of deveopment—down—development. Its current existence relies on the scientific teaching belief and innovative teaching spirit. Belief and innovation is the soul of Jianren Experimental Training School.
