4. Data Analysis Rhetorical devices, such as simile, pun, and assonance, are widely used in children’s literature to create a special fantastic, humorous and delightful atmosphere. Such is the case in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (‘Alice’ for short in the following context). Because the subtle effects arising from rhetorical devices is often associated with the native language, these devices would be a source of huge troubles and challenges to translators, who are expected to well match the translation with the original one. The following discussion will mainly focus on the translation of simile, pun and assonance in Alice. In all, three different renderings of Alice provide an excellent illustration of literal versus free, but two versions will be compared for each example. As mentioned above, in the following analysis, the author will compare Professor Zhao Yuanren’s(趙元任)version with either Li Hanzhao’s(李漢昭)or Li Minzhong’s(李敏中)version of the same passage. In order to provide good translations for children, it is necessary to find proper translation strategies. The author is going to make a decision whether they are proper or not according to the following rule: to provide a translation that can be well understood and fully appreciated by Chinese children as much as how the original text is by the original readers. This means that not only could Chinese children know how the original readers have understood the content of the text, but also they should be able to appreciate some of the impact on and appeal to the original readers. 4.1 The Analysis of Simile Translation In Example 1, the modified image “authority” means power and the direct Chinese meaning may be “weiwang, quanwei” (“威望、權(quán)威”). Although “hen you quanwei” (“很有權(quán)威”) in Version 2(世博北京翻譯公司) is a faithful translation, most children are likely to understand it with difficulty. Moreover, the sarcastic tone of “authority” vanishes in this version. In contrast, the understandable “dao xiang shi ge yaojin renwu” (“倒像 是個(gè)要緊人物”) succeeds in transmitting the satirical tone in the original as well as the meaning.
